EYH Conference 2009 Workshop List

Using Computers to Make Maps

Dr. Amy Bloom, ISU Geography/Geology

Explore geography by making and studying maps on the computer. Each student will construct her own map and print a copy to take home.

Seeing What Your Eyes Don't See

Dr. Marjorie A. Jones, ISU Chemistry

This workshop involves the use of spectrophotometers to look at colors of materials. We will use both UV and visible light and compare differences with various molecules and various conditions. We will also compare the ability of your eye to see what a spectrophotometer "sees."

When Eggs Go Splat!

Ms. Andrea Hesselbach, ISU Physics

Design and build a safety cradle for an egg to prevent it from breaking. We'll be learning the basic principles of physics while we test our safety cradles.

Who am I? Exploring the Science of Psychology

Dr. Alycia M. Hund, ISU Psychology

Students will participate in activities to learn more about how neurons communicate and affect the way we interact, how we process and remember details, and how our suggestibility impacts everyday interactions. Students also will visit with female scientists at various career levles in this social science field.

Developing Strong Structures for Use on Earth and in Space

Ms. Stacey Shrewsbury, BN Challenger Learning Center

Come to this workshop to learn about and practice making geometric forms and shapes in modular polyhedrons. Applying what you know, become the scientists and engineers who design and build a boon base for future astronauts. We'll test your structures to see if they can withstand a moonquake!

Science Fun with FETCH

Ms. Bethany Thomas, Children's Discovery Museum

Explore the world of science with hands-on activities based on the PBS show FETCH including Float my Bat and Blow it Away.

Anitibodies and Immunizations: Why do I need that shot?

Do you ever wonder what happens inside your body after your doctor gives you a shot? Why do you have to take your dog or cat to the veterinarian every year for a rabies immunization? Attend this workshop to be an antibody and learn how these tiny molecules have a big job in protecting you and your pets from germs. We’ll do some hands on activities in a science laboratory.

Weird Warping and Morphing Madness

Ms. Kay Wilson, ISU Information Technology

Learn how to warp and morph pictures using free software that can be downloaded at home.

CSI at ISU

Dr. Lori A. Woeste, ISU Health Sciences

How is Reggie the Redbird connected to clinical laboratory science and forensics? Learn how through interactive laboratory experiments! Help Dr. Woeste and ISU students from the CLS club perform lab tests to uncover what scientific processes are affecting ISU’s mascot.

Women in Science and Math HERstory Quiz Game

Ms. Grace Foote Johns, ISU Physics

Play an information scavenger hunt game in teams while learning about women’s contributions to math, science, and computers. Solve science puzzles too!

Engineering: A Flood of Opportunities

Ms. Joy Rexshell, P. E., Lewis, Yockey & Brown, Inc.

Learn about the variety of opportunities within the engineering profession. We will also do an experiment to show the affects of levees and wetlands on river flooding.

Video Poetry: Turning Print Literature into Digital Media

Dr. Cheryl Ball, ISU English

Ms. Veronica Chavez, ISU Planetarium

The program explores careers in astronomy and the specific work of several astronomers.

So, You Want to Be a Brain Scientist!

Dr. Valeri Farmer-Dougan, ISU Psychology and Biological Sciences Departments

Spend a day in the life of a neuroscientist! Learn about the brain, help conduct an experiment and look at real animal brains using microscopes and other cool instruments!

Do you have what it takes to be an actuary for Pedal-On?

Dr. Ranee Thiagarajah, ISU Mathematics

Pedal-On, a fictitious bike insurance company, is looking for participants to help its actuaries determine how much to charge for insurance policies. Play the role of an actuary at Pedal-On by setting insurance premiums for the company. Then we will fast forward a few years and see if the rates charged by Pedal-On will be enough to cover bike accident claims! Are you up to the challenge?
